Löyly (say “LOO-loo”) is the Finnish word for sauna steam. Ladle water onto the hot stones. A wave of soft steam rolls off the ceiling and the room feels hotter for a minute.

Sauna at every age

What the research says, decade by decade

Most of the science comes from Finland, where sauna is a weekly habit from childhood on. Here's what studies have found for each stage of life.

Ages 3–12 Kids 5–7 min

Finnish families bring children in from about age 3. Keep rounds short, sit them on the lower bench where it's cooler, and stay with them the whole time.

Competitive runners who used a sauna after training for three weeks ran 32% longer before exhaustion, with a 7% rise in blood plasma volume. A small study, but a striking result.

Among 2,315 Finnish men aged 42–60 followed for about 20 years, those using a sauna 4–7 times a week had a 66% lower risk of dementia than once-a-week users.

In 1,688 Finnish men and women aged 53–74, sauna 4–7 times a week was linked to roughly 70% lower cardiovascular mortality than once a week. The benefit held for women too.

These are observational studies. They show that frequent sauna users had better outcomes, not that sauna alone caused them. Children need constant adult supervision. If you're pregnant, have a heart condition or take blood-pressure medication, check with your doctor first.
